President's Message - April 2019

Posted: 24th April 2019, 11:49am

I am writing this column reflecting on yet another wonderful St George’s Day Lunch at Sopwell House Hotel on Friday. To those of you lucky enough to have secured a ticket to one of the year’s most anticipated events I hope you had a splendid day. In addition to eating, drinking, singing, sharing good conversation and being entertained by Mark Steel, (the 371 responses to his tweet, “who knows anything about St Albans?” are quite entertaining) we were able to raise much needed funds for three vital local charities, Herts Domestic Abuse Helpline, The Counselling Foundation and The Ollie Foundation.

Herts Domestic Abuse Helpline is a confidential, free, support and signposting service for anyone affected by domestic abuse.

The Counselling Foundation is a leading charity that has provided counselling and counselling training for the better mental health of the communities in Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire since 1974.

The OLLIE Foundation (One Life Lost is Enough) is a charity devoted to stopping teenagers and young people from taking their own lives. It funds suicide prevention skills training for any individual or community that wants it, especially those interacting with young people, or young people themselves.

I extend huge thanks to our sponsors without whom the day would not be possible: to our headline sponsor Debenhams Ottaway and to SA Law, My Mustard, Amthal Fire & Security, Sherrards, Wagada, Riverside Insurance, Blue Feather Photography, Moonlite Entertainment, Ember Designs, Rayden Solicitors, Conical, Kingston Smith, Haddon & James Auctioneers and EIC Insurance. Thanks also to those firms and individuals who so generously donated auction items.

I know you would all wish to join with me in thanking the Chamber Office Team for their hard work in making the event such a great success. Lisa, Anna and Emma worked their socks off to make sure the event was yet again a great success. This marked Lisa’s last St George’s Day Lunch as Executive Director as she will be stepping down in June to take a break before pursuing new interests. We will, of course, have a chance to thank Lisa in due course for her enormous contribution to and impact on the success of the Chamber over the last 14 years.

In the meantime, I look forward to seeing you at our Business Breakfast at the Herts Showground and during Business Week, when we have a full programme of workshops, CPD, networking, and social events planned.

Alastair

Chamber President
