Chamber Treasurer Mark Fordham now heading up St Albans Against Business Crime (SABAC)

St Albans Business Against Crime (SABAC) set out to, and has been successful in, reducing business crime in the main shopping areas of the St Albans district, protecting business but also reducing risk for shoppers – with a benefit both to shopkeepers and the community as a whole.

It has achieved this with a number of initiatives, but particularly its shop radio service, provided by Shopsafe, which is linked to St Albans CCTV and the local police, as well as other retailers. This has enabled the apprehension of a number of criminals and helps store staff feel safer.

SABAC provides a means for retailers to warn and support each other and, in addition, a method for banning persistent offenders and trouble-makers from its members’ premises. These bans have been effective in diverting many of the persistent offenders away from the district.
