Exciting Chamber retail initiative goes live today
The www.shopstalbans.co.uk website allows you to search for shops by type, by name or by location within the City, with a map identifying shopping areas and parking nearby. It also shows travel directions and some of the attractions that make a visit to St Albans not just a shopping trip, but a great day out. The front page features retail offers, news and events, so it will be useful for residents as well as visitors.
The idea came to Chamber Director Alastair Woodgate when he saw the Bluewater website and he bought the domain name straight away. St Albans City & District Council stepped in to provide the funding to get the website started, and the development and design tender was won in a close fought contest by Chamber members My Mustard and Velvet Agency.
Every retailer, restaurant, pub, bar and café gets a free listing so the site will be a complete guide, but extra features and advertising will be sold to provide the additional funding required to promote the site, keep it up to date and develop it further. Proposed banners in the city centre will help make local residents and visitors aware of the website too.
This initiative marks a big first for the Chamber: although the Chamber has often been a facilitator and has been involved in commenting on initiatives in St Albans, this is the first time it has led a project to directly develop the local economy.
