President's Message - November 2021

I am writing this article as FA Cup fever has gripped St Albans!

St Albans City stunned League Two leaders Forest Green Rovers yesterday evening by knocking them out in the first round of the FA Cup. Despite two leagues and 48 places separating the teams, St Albans City won 3-2 and are now in the second round draw which is taking place later today.

The match came in front of a sold-out Clarence Park with over 4,000 spectators packing the ground and was televised on BBC Two. It has brought a lot of publicity for the football club as well as our city and its business community. It has cemented the relationship between the football club and St Albans businesses. The club have raised the profiles of businesses through their online presence on YouTube and local sponsors are gaining additional publicity for the support they have shown the club over the years

The timing of the match couldn’t have been better with the COP26 talks continuing in Glasgow. SACFC’s shirt sponsors are the local rock bank Enter Shikari who performed at the conference and travelled back from Glasgow by train to attend the game. Their opponents are the country’s only fully vegan football club and the first club in the world to be certified carbon-neutral by the United Nations. Sustainability is central to everything they do, proving sports teams can lead the fight against climate change.

This cup tie continues to show how we can all work together for the good of St Albans, its business and sporting communities with more to come!

This Thursday, we will be hosting our annual Community Business Awards and announcing the seven winners as well as the recipient of the prestigious President’s Award. All our finalists have been interviewed by a judging panel comprised of Chamber Board Directors and sponsors apart from the Best Restaurant Award winner which was decided by readers of the Herts Advertiser. I would like to thank our judges for their time and support and Emma and Anna who work tirelessly to ensure our events are a success. We look forward to sharing our winners and pictures from the event in due course.
