Richard Driscoll CEO NACC Wins Hertfordshire Business Person of the Year Award for 2009!

In his 18th year at the helm of the St Albans-based National Association for Colitis and Crohn’s Disease (NACC), CEO Richard Driscoll  has won Hertfordshire Business Person of the Year Award for 2009.

Where others might have sought bonuses for personal gain, Richard has devoted his energies to growing this national charity to a membership of 30,600, with a staff of 27 and a turnover of £1.9 million. The NACC is a member of the St Albans Chamber of Commerce, and through its networking events has raised support and awarded tenders for service provision from local providers.

This year,  the NACC will fund half a million pounds of research, and campaigns tirelessly on behalf of people with Colitis and Crohn’s Disease (Inflammatory Bowel Disease) to win improved health services and a national standary of quality care.

Whilst almost a quarter of a million people across the UK suffer with Colitis or Crohn’s (one person in 250), one third of UK hospitals lack a dedicated gastroenterology ward and/or a specialist IBD nurse to support those with these distressing but little-publicised gastrointestinal disorders, which last a lifetime and for which there is no known cure.

Steering the NACC through the recession presents a challenge as the charity needs to raise over £5,000 per day to continue its helplines and information services, its support of patients and their families, and its grants to research and also to those on low income suffering hardship.

Simon Travis, DPhil FRCP, Constant Gastroenterologist and Honorary Senior Lecturer, University of Oxford, and Chairman of the Scientific Committee of the European Crohn’s and Colitis Organisation (EFCCA) says:

“I’ve worked with Richard Driscoll for 15 years … he is a credit to the county and will bring credit to the position of Business Person of the Year for Hertfordshire, as a man whose business is making charity work for people.”
